The narration

I told the sailors to throw me into the sea, and a great fish swallowed me whole, and buried me alive in the dark. I ran from God because His mercy was too wide. He sent me to Nineveh, the city I hated, I'd sooner drown than see her spared. The storm came for my sake; the lot fell on me. To spare the sailors, I had them throw me overboard. Three days buried alive in the fish. Then, long after I was dust, scribes demanded a sign, Jesus gave them only my name: For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. I went down guilty, the storm was mine. He went down innocent, bearing what was ours; He gave Himself. The grave no more held Him than the deep held me. He rose. You who are sure you've fallen too far, that is how far His mercy reaches. It cost Him the grave. Stop running, and turn: the One who went down into your dark and rose again is Jesus. Come up out of the deep, and live.

The pattern

Jonah is the shadow. Jesus is the man casting it.
Jonah, about 780 BC
Offers himself to the sea to save the men on the ship.
Jonah 1:12"Take me up, and cast me forth into the sea; so shall the sea be calm unto you."
Jesus, about AD 33
Lays his life down. No one takes it from him.
John 10:18"No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself."
Jonah
Goes down guilty. The storm was his own.
Jonah 1:12"For I know that for my sake this great tempest is upon you."
Jesus
Goes down innocent. The storm was ours.
Isaiah 53:6"The LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all."
Jonah
Three days and three nights in the belly of the fish.
Jonah 1:17"And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights."
Jesus
Three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
Matthew 12:40"So shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
Jonah
Cries from the belly of hell, and is heard.
Jonah 2:2"Out of the belly of hell cried I, and thou heardest my voice."
Jesus
Death was not able to hold him.
Acts 2:24"Whom God hath raised up, having loosed the pains of death: because it was not possible that he should be holden of it."
Jonah
The deep gives him back to the dry land, alive.
Jonah 2:10"And it vomited out Jonah upon the dry land."
Jesus
The tomb could not hold him. Empty.
Matthew 28:6"He is not here: for he is risen, as he said."

This is what Awakeden means by seeing Jesus in the whole Bible: the Old Testament draws the outline, the New Testament fills it in.

The meat

for the ones who want to dig

Why 'sign' is a loaded word

The scribes wanted a miracle performed on demand: proof without surrender. Jesus refuses their demand; that sign-seeking generation gets one sign only, the sign of Jonah: his death, burial and rising. He stakes the whole claim on it. If the tomb is not empty, you can walk away. That is not how frauds talk.

Matthew 12:39An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas.

A psalm sung inside a grave

Jonah chapter 2 is a song, prayed from inside the fish in the language of the Psalms. Psalm 42:7 cries: all thy waves and thy billows are gone over me. Jonah prays that psalm-language back to God from inside what should have been his tomb, certain he will be heard. A thousand years of Scripture later, another Man went into the grave with a psalm on his lips.

Jonah 2:3All thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

Two sleepers, two storms

Jonah slept in the hold while the storm raged (Jonah 1:5). Jesus slept in the stern while the storm raged (Mark 4:38). Both were shaken awake by terrified men afraid to perish. The sea calmed when Jonah was thrown in. The sea calmed when Jesus simply spoke. Same scene, utterly different man.

Mark 4:39Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

A greater than Jonas is here

Jonah preached one reluctant sermon and a whole violent city repented in sackcloth. Jesus' point cuts: pagan Nineveh repented at the lesser prophet, while the experts stood in front of the greater One and demanded paperwork.

Matthew 12:41They repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.

Today

why this is in your feed

"Show me a sign and I'll believe."

That is still the deal we offer God. Prove yourself first, fix this diagnosis, this marriage, this bank balance, and then I'll listen. Jesus answered that demand with one sign: a grave that could not keep him.

And Jonah is in the story for the ones who are running. He did not drift from God; he bought a ticket in the opposite direction, because he knew exactly how merciful God is and hated it. If you have gone down that far on purpose, the fish is the point: the deep you chose is not deeper than the mercy that follows you into it.

Stop running, and turn. The One who went down into your dark and rose again is Jesus. Come up out of the deep, and live.
